MRS. LEMIRE’S FIRST AND SECOND GRADE

Dear Parents,

What a gorgeous few days we have had for weather this week! Children are cert6ainly enjoying being outside playing and having fun with friends. Children have been working so hard with their lessons in the classroom. They have been engaged and focused as learners. I am so proud of all they have accomplished and the progress they are making each day! Keep up the great work everyone!!

First graders have begun a unit in math on subtraction. Second graders are focusing on place value to 100. They are all enjoying Xtra-Math. Thank you for continuing that at home as added practice for math facts. It certainly makes a difference with their progress.

Reading groups are going well. I am so pleased with their reading so far. Children really seem to enjoy books that we are reading during groups. We are focusing on retelling a story, characters, problem, solution and writing short responses about the books. We are also working on sight words to build upon reading skills to help us as a reader. I appreciate your support with reading at home with your child. Children have told me that they enjoy reading at home. That is so nice to hear!!

Pumpkins will be our focus for science. We will be reading books about pumpkins, learning about the life cycle of a pumpkin, investigating a pumpkin and making a couple books about pumpkins.

In Social Studies children will continue with learning about maps and the community around us.

I am sure that your child has told you the Saint they are going to be for your Saint Celebration on October 31st, but if they haven’t I will put that in Thursday folders for you. If you have any questions about costumes just let me know.

Children will be having a party on Thursday, October 31st in our classroom. They will be having some treats and watching a movie. Please let me know if you would like to send in something for our party. Some ideas might be cupcakes, cookies, fruit, popcorn, cheese and crackers, and chips. I would like to have just a couple sweet treats if we can. Thank you. I have plenty of juice. Please send me a note or email me if you want to send in something.

Dear Parents,

What a wonderful day we had for our apple picking trip! Everyone had such a good time. The children sure did enjoy the apple donuts and cider as well as picking apples and going through the corn maze many times.

I have finished reading assessments and we will begin reading groups on Monday. Reading homework will start on Monday. Your child will have a book pouch with a book to read to you each night. There will be a paper for you to sign in the book pouches. If your child is in afterschool care, they can do homework with Miss Wilson on Monday’s and with me Tuesday-Thursday. No homework on Friday. Just let me know if you would like the book sent home. Thank you so much!

We are working on addition in math for both first and second. We have also begun X-tra Math as an added resource for practicing math facts. I have sent home information in Thursday folders for your children to do this at home. This is a great way for them to build upon their skills for math. If you have any questions let me know.

In science for this trimester our focus will be life science. We have done activities about apples and read many books along with discussions on this topic. Other topics will be fall changes, leaves, trees, and pumpkins.

In social studies our focus will be on different groups such as family, school, neighborhood, and the city. We will also be doing some mapping activities.

We continue to work on practicing expectations along with interactive modeling as a guide for us. Children are working hard, and I am so proud of all they have accomplished. Keep up the great work!

Dear Parents,

We have had an awesome first week of school. It was so nice to see all the children again. I have really enjoyed all the laughter, stories and excitement for learning this week. Our focus has been on learning about ourselves and each other. We have completed various activities around this theme. We have begun working on “Fabulous Me” posters as a class project. If you have not sent in a picture of your child as well as a family picture, could you please do so, thanks so much.! Children have begun thinking about their Hopes and Dreams for the school year. We have read the book Miss Rumphius as a way to help us think about our hopes and dreams. We will continue working on other activities centered around our hope and dreams next week. Children have completed a writing piece about summer fun! We had an Author’s Chair presentation as a way for them to share their stories. What great stories and illustrations children had to share.

We have begun practicing and modeling expectations, rules and procedures for our procedures for our classroom.  This goes along with Responsive Classroom Management that all teachers are using and have taken classes on.

Children are welcome to bring in cupcakes or a treat when it is their birthday to celebrate with the class.

Dear Parents,

It is hard to believe that the school year is already over. I have truly enjoyed the children so much this school year! Our classroom has been full of learning, laughter, making new friends, and discovering new things about ourselves and others. Everyone has unique talents, personalities, and gifts that made our class so special each day. I  can not express enough how proud I am of how they have grown as students and learners. It was so nice to see how everyone strived to do their personal best each day! Awesome work!!

I would like children to read throughout the summer. Have them relax with a book and just read for enjoyment.  Visit the local library in your town and chose a few books to read.(Free lunch By The Lunch box will be at the Barton Library on Wednesdays.)  Many of you have a variety of books at home as well.  These would be great books for them to read too! Keep a reading journal or take a picture doing a fun reading activity at home or at the library.  Reading throughout the summer makes such a difference with reading progress in the fall. Thanks so much!!   Spread the work out over the summer.  You may continue Xtra-Math as well. There is a letter going home to help you sign up if you would like. This will help to keep math skills fresh. There will be a few weekly readers for children to  read. Please don’t send them back. Just something extra for learning. Children really enjoy these and it is a fun way to read.

I want to express my sincere gratitude for all you have done to help your child to be successful this year and for your continued support. You have all made such a difference for your child. I appreciate everything so much! They are all truly amazing!!

2nd Grade

The second grade class is very structured. The teacher sets obtainable goals and communicates clear expectations. Students continue to be kind and respectful while developing a love of learning in a safe, nurturing environment. Students become responsible for their own learning. When students have met grade level goals and basic skill expectations, they are ready to face the challenges of the next grade as confident, independent, well adjusted individuals.

Curriculum Overview:

Second Grade Mathematics: Students begin by reviewing addition and subtraction facts. The study of place value to one hundred follows. Students work with data and graphing. They review the addition and subtraction of two digit numbers. Geometry, time and money are further units. Students also learn place value to one thousand. The addition and subtraction of three digit numbers comes next. Students investigate fractions and probability. Students continue to review basic math facts with Fast Math. The mathematics textbook for the second grade is Progress in Math.

Science: Students review the scientific method. They explore physical science, life science, and earth science. One major unit of study focuses on Plants and Animals (Growth and Change, Habitats, Foods and Stages of Development). Students play with magnets. They study the Human Body (Senses, Body Systems, and Bones and Muscles), and they discuss Health and Safety. Other units include Observing and Exploring Matter, Sound, the Night Sky and the Moon, Rocks and Soil, Weather and Natural Resources.

Social Studies: Ongoing topics in Social Studies are Getting Acquainted, Social Skills and Personal Information. Beyond these summary units, there are two cycles of instruction within Social Studies. The first cycle includes Geography Skills (Where We Live), American Indians, Christmas Around the World, People Make History, Black History Month, We All Work Together, Caring for the Earth, Being a Good Citizen and People in Time and Place. Topics in the second cycle include School Days, At Home with My Family, Christmas Celebrations and Traditions, Living in a Community, Black History Month, In and Around the Land, My Country and My Heroes, and My World Near and Far. Specific geography skills (mapping, graphing) appear within units as well. The text for both cycles is Social Studies by Harcourt Brace.
